What you learn

You will learn paint trade terminology, work with basic hand and power tools, gibbing and gib stopping, finish walls and apply coats of paint to industry standards.

You will also learn about health and safety, first aid, different types of paints and materials generally used, calculations, working at heights and professional communication.

You will gain the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Skills (Allied Trades) (Level 3). This programme is delivered through Cornerstone Education Ltd PTE, within the Aspire2 Group and is an NZQA approved qualification.

You could choose further study in carpentry, joinery or another construction-related allied trade or seek employment as an apprentice or an entry level job in the painting and plastering sector.

What does a painter get paid?

 The average annual income of painters is estimated to be $43,500.
Apprentices and new employees in painting and floor finishing are likely to enter the trade on the training wage or on the minimum wage.
Painters and floor finishers can go on to become supervisors for other tradespeople at building sites. Some also establish their own businesses.
